My neighborhood took on a familiar smell on September 13, as folks fired up their hibachis and grilled meat under the moon. Admittedly, it’s not easy to actually see the moon in this tightly-packed warren of narrow lanes and tall buildings, but the grills, the coolers, the lawn chairs set up in a circle around the grill took me right back to South Street. Charlotte Neal’s fire pit would be exactly the right place to celebrate this lovely, low-key holiday. Click through for photos.

What is maybe not the same everywhere … They’re sitting in the street, and they’re enjoying the holiday in front of an open-to-the-street temple. I’ll have to do a post on the temples in my neighborhood soon — just like on South Street, where we have a Methodist church, a synagogue, and a Quaker meeting house in just a few blocks, this neighborhood is well-stocked with houses of worship.
