Election season is here, and so is Christmas.
I’ve been wondering when campaigning for the January 11 legislative and presidential elections would begin. About two weeks ago I started seeing signs on buildings and buses. Turns out, no matter which party wins the legislative race in my district, my neighbors and I will be represented by a woman.

As for Christmas, it is most in evidence at Starbucks, which changed overnight from green signs and green aprons to red signs and red aprons and all the Christmas swag. It’s also showing up in other stores.

And now for a couple of oddities.

Finally, it was “fall back” time last weekend in the US, provoking the usual outcry on Facebook about how much people hate changing to and from Daylight Savings Time. Allow me to provide another perspective. Taiwan doesn’t have Daylight Savings Time. As you can see from the screenshot below, that means that while it is full daylight at 6 am, when most of us are still trying to sleep, it’s dark at 5 pm. My friends, you do not want this. We don’t need daylight at 6:00, and eating dinner in the dark stinks. All that perfectly good, free solar radiation while you’re trying catch a few more minutes of sleep, then turning on the lights to fix supper, even in the summer.
It’s okay with me if we quit changing the clocks, but I hope we can leave them on Daylight Savings Time all year round.
